AQL explained
What an AQL inspection means.
AQL (Acceptable Quality Limit) is a sampling standard, set out in ISO 2859-1, used for final inspections. Instead of checking every piece, the inspector checks a random sample sized to the order quantity, and the order passes if the defects found are within the agreed limits.
| Defect type | Examples | Common limit in apparel |
|---|---|---|
| Critical | A broken needle or sharp metal left in a garment, a safety hazard, a missing mandatory label | Zero tolerance |
| Major | Open seams, measurements out of tolerance, visible stains, wrong colour, a misplaced logo | AQL 2.5 |
| Minor | Loose threads, untrimmed ends, slight unevenness that does not affect use or sale | AQL 4.0 |
General Inspection Level II with AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects is a widely used starting point for apparel. We agree the level with you, and with your inspector if you use one, before production starts. The approved sample and your size chart are the reference.
